Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Regional Survey Party of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 1974. The naming section is located in the vicinity of the Wangmen Village, Baibao Township, Shangsi County, Guangxi, with its reference section being situated in the Fulongao area of Chengfang County stretching to the Nadang area of Shangsi County.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of variegated gritstone, fine-grained sandstone and mudstone, with its basal part consisting of boulder conglomerate. Middle part consists of an alternating layer of variegated sandstone and mudstone. Upper part represents variegated sandstone and mudstone, intercalated with coal seams, with a thickness of about 520 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The basal part of the formation is in a conformable contact with the underlying Fulongao Fm (Fulong'ao Fm)

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Baixing Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed in the Shangsi, Qinzhou and China-Vietnam border areas of the Shiwandashan Mts, with a greatly varying thickness and gradually thinning from southwest to northeast, and being of 1923 m in the vicinity of Heluo Ridge, of 1511 m in the area from Dongzhong to Nanan, and getting thinner in the area of Wangmen Village to be of 442 m in thickness, and being of only 192 m in the Xintang area on the eastern end of the basin. In the vicinity of the Nianxi Village the formation is intercalated with hematite ore beds.

Fossils

It yields a small amount of plant fossils as represented by Otozamites sp., and spore-pollen fossils as represented by Lycopodiumsportes sp. and Classopollis classoides.


Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Wangmen Fm spanned the early-Early Jurassic.
